This is where came into the conceive of.  After being in the orphanage several years a wonderful researcher fell in like with them and made sure they would have a home at LPZ.  Unfortunately shortly after they arrived in Chicago this much loved researcher was tragically killed in a plane accident on one of her missions.  The excellent training cater at LPZ worked with the two bears for several years to try to alter their lives dramatically.  They tried to hold back their stereotypic behaviors such as pacing that they acquired due to living in tiny spaces for several years.  Since they are from the wild and their genetics are very valuable to the captive population  they have attempted to cause them along with training them for vaginal swabs and electro ejaculation (can I say that on myspace?) needed for artificial insemination.  During their measure at LPZ and all their training sessions a accumulate was found in Bandau’s jaw which turned out to be cancerous.  Half her furnish jaw was removed which leaves her tongue dangling out of her mouth most of the time.  It has never impeded her ability to eat or groom but we did have to post some signage out along her possess yard due to all the questions.  All in all the keepers especially one in particular have fallen in like with these two adorable beasts. Unfortunately the Bear Taxon Advisory Group recommended that the two bears be moved to their new home in Minneapolis. Minnesota.  The exhibit is supposed to be great for sun bears and their keeper staff is top notch.  This wasn’t the first choice of zoos but you would be amazed by how many zoos didn’t be Bandau due to her jaw issue.  It is very sad that zoos are more worried about their image having a bear with a dangling tongue than about educating the public on such an amazing story of two orphaned bears being rescued from a tragic life and trying to make a new start here in the states. So today was particularly difficult for us when Bandau had her pre-shipment exam so that we can send her to MN.  Luckily she was awesome and was hand-injected with her anesthesia by the veterinary staff.  We all got to love on her just a bit while she slept on her gurney between her dental ultrasound and radiographs.  By far one of my favorite parts of this job is being able to comprehend the animals while they are under anesthesia and to see all the awesome radiographs and ultrasound images.  You just can’t get that any where else in the world.   We bring home the bacon these carnivores every day but only get to comprehend them once a year during their physicals.  Most people don’t realize that keepers don’t go in with carnivores.  This is not Las Vegas and we don’t go in with our animals to instruct them to do stupid circus stunts.  These are wild animals that bear all their abilities they have in the wild and we respect that about them. Anyways so after bandau’s exam we brought her back to her den and waited for the anesthesia to wear off and our feisty feature to go.  It ordain be so hard to see these two go.  They are two of the loviest people oriented bears I have known.  And one keeper I know has made have in mind of crating the bears in the lay of the night to take them domiciliate with her so they won’t go.  We all know that ordain never happen but it is so hard to take care of these babies for so many years and then just let them go.  It is hard to transfer them off to a new team of keepers to mouth to care for them.  I always conclude like I will never be able to tell them about all the things they like or are scared of their personality quirks the special routines we have each day that they experience to depend on.  Often times it is easy to forget that these are wild animals perfectly capable of adapting to new situations.  That the keepers we are giving them to are probably just as qualified if not more than us to compassionate for these animals.  We are like nervous parents dropping our kids off at college and hoping that they find good people to help them in their transition.  It is so sad to go to work the next day and see their dens and yards alter.  We just try to focus on their new situation and all the positive things that program will undergo to furnish them to we couldn’t.  This completely explains.
